How To Cure Reflux?

I had a face lift. My voice was normal until the 4th week when I tried to sing along with the sound of music. I couldn t make a sound. Since then, Dec.5th my voice has been compromised. I can hardly talk and feel strangulated in the throat. I was able to get into an ENT doc, and she said my vocal chords were thick and that I had reflux. She prescribed nexium. I got very severe pains from taking that. Went to Prylosec, and still the stomach /diaphragm pains, an old nemesis. I have had to quit taking them. I can take occasionaly tagament, 1/2. Steaming seams to loosen some mucous, and that gives some relief.

The ENT doctor recommending domperidone and the NSAid, I cannot take because the 1st is not available in the US and I cannot take NSAIDS due to a heart problem and ulcer avoidance. So that is out. For the doctor that mentioned pain killers and antibiotiocs, interesting that when this came about I was taking amoxicillin for a tooth ache/ root canal and pain killers for a baker s cyst in the knee. I never take more than 2.5 mg of hydrocodone/350 tylenlol but still that may have aggravated things. I quit take proton pump inhibitors as my esophagus couldn t take the pain. Subsequently I am a bit better because I drink lots of plain water and eating nothing about 4 hours before bedtime. Trying to rest my voice. It seems that phlegm was wrapped around my vocal chords and with steaming and lots of water, I have been able to liberate my voice somewhat.

Checked dates. The day I had the first stage of the root canal, the carbolic acid, or medication that smelled and tasted like carbolic rolled down my throat in spite of their clumsy dam. That tooth ached and it was after this date, two days later that I had difficulty with my throat. Probably the medicine was harmful?

Hi,

You need to take a proton pump inhibitor like pantoprazole or omeprazole to reduce acid secretion along with an prokinetic agent like domperidone. With these since vocal cord has swollen due to reflux you can use NSAID like aceclofenac with serratiopeptidase to reduce swelling and pain. Have limited food at frequent intervals (3 hour) and while sleeping your head end should be raised. Give voice rest. If infected then you need to take antibiotic.

These will help you.

ENT Specialist Dr. Sriram Nathan's  Response
ello and welcome to HCM,

I am Dr Sriram Nathan an ENT surgeon who has treated thousands with reflux

At the offset let me assure you that reflux is a common problem and the treatment is simple and effective if the medications and instructions are followed properly.

The reflux as such may be due to stress and medication.

Do not worry as it is very common and will get better in a week or two. The throat will definitely feel raw when you have infection and reflux so do not worry.

In any case you need to relax and do these immediately:

- maintain a proper balanced diet and stick to the timings religiously. Avoid outside food and try to take home cooked meals only.

-Take salt water gargle with warm water at least twice a day.

-Avoid anything spicy, oily or high flavoured

-I would prefer to start an anti reflux tablet like pantoprazole along with a multivitamin like the zincovit in my patients. You may start any other but you must complete a course and not discontinue immediately. These will help your throat to be resistant to irritation and also keep the reflux under check. Your doctor will know about these medications.

-do not immediately lie down after a meal

-If you take excess antibiotics or pain killers then your reflux will become worse so unless you severe pain or other symptoms you do not need to take antibiotics or pain killers.

-do not strain your voice as this will further cause increase in reflux.

-Take only bland non oily and non spicy diet with lots of green leafy vegetables for the next one week

Wait for a week or two for these to work and if your symptoms do not improve does not stop then you must take an endoscopy of the upper GI get back to me or any ENT surgeon with the reports.

Take care and get well soon

regards

Dr Sriram Nathan
