Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How To Deal With Aggressive Behavior And Mood Swings In A Teenager?
My teen daughter is being very emotional. Overreacting, not able to let go. Has to talk through issues for hours on end. Sometimes pupils dilate and she becomes aggressive, leaning in close talking loud. Other times she is low energy, not wanting to get out of bed. She blames me for everything, wants more freedom and demands explanations that she can accept. She has ADD but I am concerned she also has depression of bipolar disorder. Her birth family suffers from depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
As you have rightly pointed out, there could be a concern for bipolar disorder, however, there are other more common possibilities with her age that needs to be ruled out.
First and foremost, please rule out the possibility of substance abuse. Secondly, this behavior could be nothing but a teenage tantrum. However, in either case, it is very important to talk to her and discuss and listen to her about her issues. In such cases, a trusted and reliable friend can be of great help, who can talk to her.
If this does not work out, you can take her to a psychiatrist who can help you and her.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
