How To Determine The Condition PCOS? How Soon Should I Attempt Pregnancy?

Hi,
I am 27 and will turn 28 in october this year. I am married since 3 years now. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 15 and I was on medications to take care of it. After a couple of years my period was regular so I stopped the medications. Since, then I have periods every month but they do not come on a regular interval. Two years back I have severe pain in lower abdomen on the right side and ultra sound tests showed that I had enlarged right ovary. Since, I wasn't planning to get pregnant soon my ob-gyn suggested that I should start taking contraceptive pills Lo-Loestrin to reduce the size of the ovary. I was on pills for a year and then I did another ultra sound and the tests showed that the size of the ovary was back to normal. I still get my periods with irregular intervals, though the tests are normal. Now, my question is that, how do I know whether I am still suffering from PCOS or not? If I am then when is the ideal time I should start planning to conceive?

Hello,
Since you have continued having irregular cycles, it is likely that your PCOD is still persisting. You should start getting investigated with a complete hormonal profile, sonogram, blood counts, glucose tolerance test, urinalysis, serum DHEAS levels, tubal patency etc., apart from maintaining a healthy BMI. Appropriate medication like thyroxine for hypothyroid state, if present and Metformin for treating insulin resistance and Clomiphene for inducing ovulation and Bromocryptine for controlling higher prolactin levels may be used and regular monitoring and timed intercourse are sure to bring success. Please maintain a healthy weight and regular exercise apart from a healthy diet and avoidance of stress. Hope this helps.
