How To Eradicate The Possibility Of A Child With Sickle Cell Anaemia?

Hello Dr, I am an African and of Genotype AS. My fiancée is of Genotype AS as well and we have been advised that we could give birth to a child with Sickle cell anaemia. I will like to find out if there is a procedure can be performed that will eradicate the 1/4 probability of having a child with this disease. Thank you

Hi, Thanks for asking.
There is not procedure that can eradicate the 25% possibility of conceiving a child with sickle cell anaemia.
But after you conceive it is possible to do a chorionic villi sampling of the embryo and check whether the baby has this disease. If the baby is found to have it then you may be given an option of aborting the baby.
I hope I have helped you.
Thank you.
