Hi,I am Dr. Robert Galamaga (Hematologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 48 yer old female. Eat organic food, no red meat, only chicken, turkey and fish. I take an omega supplement twice daily, do not smoke or drink. And walk on the treadmill three times a week.
My cholestrol numbers are high 288. My good is 80 the bad is 208. I cannot seem to tolerate statins, My cardiologists has ordered a calcium scoring to see if there is any plaque build up and given me a prescription for a niacin med 500 mg daily. Is there any hope for me to lower this ?
you haven't mentioned if you're overweight. This is an important bit of information. Loosing weight is one of the main "weapons" that a patient can use against cholesterol levels. If you're not overweight then another way to positively affect cholesterol levels is using products that contain phytosterols. Phytosterols have proven efficacy (although not as high as statins) in reducing cholesterol levels. Evidence about cardiovascular mortality benefits is lacking though. Another non-statin drug is ezetimibe. If the above measures don't go well for you, you could try ezetimibe. Please keep in mind that statins is the most efficient way to lower cholesterol levels and the only way that has shown benefits for cardiovascular outcomes. I hope I've helped! If you need further information, please ask. I'll be glad to answer.
