How To Reconstruct The Missing Fingers In New Born Baby?

Doctor,

I am a mother of a new born baby. My son was born with three digits

missing in his right hand. He is 20 days old now and i have been

looking out for any kind of reconstruction that may be possible. I

believe from the information i have been able to gather that the best

option i have currently is toe to finger reconstruction. I would not

be very comfortable about this option I would like to know if there

are any other options for my son. He is otherwise a healthy boy but I

am very concerned for him. Do let me know of any options that may

atleast be of cosmetic help to him. I have attached photos of his right and left

hand.

Thanking you,

Manasi

Dear Mum

Thanks for the query

While a toe transfer is a viable option, the functionality of it will not be anywhere near the function of a finger. It may give the appearance of extra finger but will not function in the same fashion. I have had many patients who are born with mssing digits but are able to use the hand as well as others with 5 digits. This is due to the adaptability of the human hand to function well even with 2 digits. Please consider this while deciding about adding additional 'fingers' which may look better but may interfere with the normal function of his native fingers

Regards
