Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How can I convince my 82-year-old, stubborn, diabetic mother that she cannot have alcohol? I have tried using my husband as a reason : he is in alcohol recovery, and it is not fair to send him to a store where he will be tempted. That is true, but she does not get it. I mostly do not want her to have any because she is three times more stubborn (and MEAN!) when she drinks alcohol. Being thoughtful of my husband s issues needs did not work tonight. Nor did the mention of her own health issues do any good. What should I try next? She lives with us, so I do have the upper hand here, but I am growing weary of the struggle. Hilfe!
It sounds like she is an alcoholic. As such, you will not be able to convince her to stop. You and your husband can refuse to get any for her, but if she can get it herself, you will not be able to prevent her from getting it. As a recovering alcoholic, your husband probably knows that no one but the alcoholic herself can stop the drinking. You might want to talk to him about his experience in this context. You might also consider going to Al-Anon meetings. These are for family members of alcoholics and can provide lots of helpful information and support to families struggling with this disease. Hope this helps.
