How To Stop Oozing Of Blood From The Stitches Due To Knee Replacement Surgery?

Hello Dr. Grief. My husband had a knee replacement the 12th of February. Everything was going great exercising and with the incision closing up beautifully. The visiting nurse took the 41 staples out last Tuesday. We exercised through Wednesday and the bottom two places where the stitches were taken out started oozing. Blood wasn t pouring out but constantly oozing. We went to the Drs Thursday and they put some steri strips on with a tight bandage. That came loose and out of position within a couple of hours. I put some clean gauze and tape. The visiting nurse came yesterday and we replaced the bandages with new steri strips. Within the next 30 minutes they were all soppy again. I have started using liquid bandage. We only have one tiny place now that s oozing. Leg is not hot or red and it looks fine. I know we are taking steps backwards as we aren t exercising now trying to get the oozing to stop. I thought it was more important to get closed than leaving it open to get possibly infected. Was I right? Thank you for your help. Sincerely, Mary

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,
My first question is . Was there a drain kept through the operated wound post operatively. If no, this may be because of some 0f the collection which would have been collected. I advice the nurse taking care to squeeze out all the collection under strict aseptic precautions, after which a tight compression bandage ( crepe bandage) needs to be applied to prevent any further collection and to close up any possible bleeders( or venous tributaries ) if at all.
I also advice to do CULTURE AND SENSITIVITY OF THE LIQUID OOZING OUT.also do an ESR and CRP just to be on the safer side.If all this comes normal , then just sit back and relax.
I find this answer helpful
