How To Stop Panadeine Usage And Is It Dangerous To Do So?

Hi, i have a friend who has been taking between 30 - 50 panadeine a day for the past few years and is wanting to stop. Is it dangerous to stop gradually, and what sort of damage would he have done to his body. He said he has been to a GP and the GP didnt seem too worried?

Hi,

Its dose should be gradually reduced before stopping it completely. Pandene contains a combination of two pain relieving medications paracetamol (500 mg) and codeine (8 mg). It is commonly prescribed for the symptomatic relief from headache, migraine, toothache, neuralgias, and other such conditions. Its recommended dose for an adult is 2 tablets to be taken for every six hours and if necessary maximum of 8 tablets can be taken in 24 hours. Based on the history your friend has been taking extra larger doses of pandeine which may damage his liver (due to paracetamol).

Codeine is an opioid pain reliever which if taken for prolonged time may cause dependence (addiction). If he stops taking codeine suddenly it can cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms such as agitation, anxiety, tremors, and sweating. So, if he wants to quit, he should be admitted in the hospital for de-addiction wherein the dose of panadeine would be gradually reduced under careful monitoring.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
