How To Stop The Bleeding Caused By A Inserted Catheter?

Hi Dr. Grief,
I have dark urine. I have a catheter inserted with drainage bags for day times and night time. How can the bleeding be stopped? I have the catheter put in for over a month now. Sometime the urine is clear and sometimes blood appeared in the urine. I have a large prostate. I have no pain, no fever, nor other discomforts. I have good apatite and regular bowel movement. What can be done besides surgery

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Large prostate can be partially removed through the urethra (without open surgery). This procedure is called TURP, can give much relief and improve urine flow (so you wont need catheter anymore). Bleeding can be caused by large prostate. It can be also a symptom of urinary tract infection due to permanent catheter presence. You need to keep that in mind and in case of blood in the urine please visit your doctor, have urine analysis and urine culture test. Antibiotics might be necessary.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
