Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a cut on my arm that has already had stitches (and still currently has them in), but I tend to pick at scabs and such and now the cut has reopened. I seem to have poked something inside because suddenly a stream of bright red blood started coming out. I applied pressure against it and held my arm above my head for about 5 minutes. But my arm started to get tingly so I put it down. I don t think it s serious, but I was wondering if there s something else I should do that I haven t done yet? It s only a small stream of blood, but it s not stopping.
You should not have picked, scratched or touched the wound that was healing. Now you have left it bleeding making it prone to infection. You are suggested to visit ER, get it clinically examined. Your wound needs to be cleaned and antiseptic dressing done at the earliest to prevent complications. Your treating doctor after clinical examination may prescribe a course of antibiotics for faster healing.
In the meantime you can clean the wound with savlon and apply Neosporin ointment. Protect it from dust, pollen, dirty fingers so that it does not get infected. If the wound is raw take a course of Ampilox-500. Keep it dry and be careful when you bathe. If it gets wet, you need to change the dressing.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
