I am a
neurologist from the Cleveland, Ohio area of the world and would like to answer a few of your questions. As you are probably aware there are no specific medications on the market at this time which are FDA approved or indicated for the treatment of chronic PRIMARY progressive forms of MS.
The only medications we truly have available in great variety and quantities are those whose indications are for remitting forms of the illness although so long as you've been started on those medications the FDA does not DISAPPROVE....nor should your insurance company stop paying......the medication which should be taken indefinitely as a way of slowing down progression of the disease.
Having said that there is 1 agent indicated for the treatment of chronic SECONDARY progressive MS and that is Novantrone or
Mitoxantrone (generic). I am not a great fan of this medication because it is extremely aggressive as a chemotherapeutic agent, has significant cardiotoxicity, and has caused a number of my patients to get worse faster (in my opinion) than others who never took the medication. I've not seen any patient truly improve on this drug.
Of course, we also treat patients symptomatically for what they develop or confront when they have any type of chronic progressive form of MS so for instance, got bladder issues? Antispasmodic medications for bladder......got pain issues/headaches?.....Special medications for pain and/or headache drugs..... got erectile dysfunction? Anti ED medications to the rescue.....so in that sense we treat chronic progressive.
