Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son has just removed the appendix yesterday and got well smoothly even though the 3 wounds (of around 1cm width) are still very painful. Is it possible for him to take a 12-hour flights 4 days later as he has to go to LA to join the orientation program in the university?
I would not take a 12 hour flight after surgery, it increases risk of blood clot in the legs and possibly to the lungs. he should wait 2-4 weeks after surgery before long travels. the incisions are expected to be tender and painful for 7-10 days acutely, sometimes up to 4 weeks post operatively. Immediately after surgery pain medications such as narcotics or ibuprofen/motrin are helpful. take them around the clock and wean over the following days as pain resolves
