How To Treat Severe Pain On Left Side Of Ribs Caused Due To Injury?

I was body boarding at the beach and landed on the stiff edge side of my body board and landed on my left side front ribs when a wave threw me off and in to the board and beach. It hurt bad right away but i could walk and breath fine. The next day i was working out and doing side sit ups and i heard a crack and then the pain shot through my ribs side chest. It hurt to sit up and even sit back down. I think i cracked my rib with the muscle strain. I can breath deep and cough fine. I am icing it and not wrapping it. Should i get a checkup or only if i develop any further symptoms?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have severe pain on left side of ribs caused due to injury. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query , but in your case the pain occur due to injury . I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination . Doctor may prescribe injections of long lasting anesthesia around the nerves that supply the ribs , prescribe breathing exercises to help you breathe more deeply because shallow breathing can put you at risk of developing pneumonia and use compression wraps like elastic bandages that you can wrap around your chest to help splint and immobilize the area. For now apply warm compresses and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain .
