How To Treat Swollen Ankle/foot When The Tests Rule Out Any Straight Forward Reason?

I have had a swollen left ankle/foot for 6 weeks. Initially it was swollen from the knee to the toes, but mainly now around the ankle & foot. Have had CT Scan & Ultrasound to rule out DVT & ruptured Bakers Cyst. Nothing shows up in the results. My Dr has no idea what it might be - just told me to elevate it and not exercise it in case I cause further damage. I massage each night & swelling reduces fractionally, then next day gradually increases as I sit down to do my job. I'm a 58yr old female, I smoke approx. 20 a day, & get very little exercise. There is NO pain associated with the swelling. In 2011, I had an injury on the outside of the ankle in BOTH feet due to walking on the cobblestones in Europe in inappropriate footwear, and hobbled around for another 3 weeks for the rest of my trip. Could this have something to do with this swelling, although it's only in 1 leg and not the other? Can you please give me some advice? regards Karen

HI
Thank for asking to HCM
I can understand your worry if I would be your doctor then I would differentiate it with either swelling or oedema if it is oedema then this is indication of renal or heart problem for to control it I would put on diuretic therapy till the reason of oedema detected, second it cloud be due to the circulatory disturbances the return of blood might be obstructed and if this is the condition then the elevation of legs are the best way to reduce this, in both the conditions it demand the great care have word with your doctor have good luck
