How To Treat Toddler Swallowing In A 3 Years Old Child With Choking At Times?

Hi , I have a similar concern about toddler swallowing. My daughter is 3 and she has been swallowing in her sleep for over 2 yrs. It sounds like big gulps and she wakes up choking at times. Usually she wakes startled even cries and I have to calm her and put her back to sleep. She drinks warm milk at night but usually more than 2 hrs before bedtime. Is it something serious I should take her to the doctor for. One more thing, she does it while awake too, as if there is a constant drip to the back of her throat. Thanks

Hi,

Frequent swallowing and chocking episodes while sleeping is due to over-prodction of saliva, normally during teething periods.

You should keep the head of your child to prevent chocking and shoking while asleep.

As you are saying such episodes remain all the day long, then, should look for:
- teething
- any throat/oral infection that should be properly treated
- be careful if she puts any toy or other small things in her mouth

All the best!
