Infant. Dark Green Stools. Only Formula Fed. Cause?

Hi My 4 months old son has been pooping dark green and he is formula fed(Similac Advance). Its been going on for about 1 and a half months. Everytime we try to feed him, he always refuses to eat. He poops every 4-5 days. My wife stopped breastfeeding at 2 months and we were only feeding him Similac advance. At 3 months we switched his formula to Similac Sensitive because he was always fuzzy. That is when he started pooping dark green so we ask our ped and she said it was normal and also told us to go back to feeding him with the Advance. Now that he is 4 months and 4 days old, he still pooping dark green. Hes not taking any iro supplements and hes not eating any solid foods yet. My question is, what could be the possible cause of his dark green stool

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

Dark green color of the stools is because of increased intestinal motility. I suggest you to not to worry regarding dark green color of the stool.

You should have continued to breast feed your baby.

Exclusive breast feeding is advised till 6 months of age.

There are lot of advantages of exclusive breast feeding a baby. Breast feeding is good for the brain growth of the baby.

Infections are less with breast feeding.

Hope this helps.
Take care.

Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Green color stool is a normal variant in infants.

If the stool is not foul smelling, not watery, and not associate wit mucus and blood , not associated with increased frequency, nothing to worry.

But exclusive breastfeeding till the age of 6 months is the best method of feeding.

The dark green color of the stool may be due to rapid passage of stool in the gut or a normal variant.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
