Infant. Diagnosed Erythema Multiforme Due To Hypersensitivity To Penicillin. Severe Itching. On Benadryl. Can Hydrocorisone Cream Or Benadryl Cream Applied On Rash?

My 1 year old daughter was just diagnosed with erythema multiforme. They said it was caused by hypersensitivity to penicillin. They didn't mention anything about putting hydrocortisone cream or Benadryl cream on the rash. Can we put these kinds of cream on the rash? She is itching like crazy even though she is taking the Benadryl suspension orally every six hours.

While steroid creams are useful to reduce the effects of allergic rashes, they are not as good in reducing the itch. You could try Benadryl lotion if available in your part of the world, as it has the soothing effects of calamine AND the anti-itching effect of the anti-histamine that it contains. This lotion is also known as Caladryl in some countries.
