Hi there,

Thank you for choosing healthcaremagic.
I will try my best to answer your query.

You mentioned that your child who is about 1 yr old had surgery for pyloric stenosis at 9 weeks of age and is also lactose intolerant.

I would like to ask you a few questions before I am able to guide you in the right direction.
1. How frequent are his stools?
2. Are all stools 'BLACK' in color? And since how long have you noticed the same.
3. Have you recently changed his formula to an iron rich formula since that can cause dark stools and also at time foul smell.
4. When he had his surgery, did he have any problems after his surgery.
5. Currently is he gaining weight?
6. Has he had any vomiting alongwith the change in his stools.
7. Have you started any medication or supplement containing iron in his diet.

All these questions' answers would help me in guiding you to the right answer.

If he has taking iron rich formula or any medication containing iron, then you have found your answer and most likely his dark stools are related to that.

I would suggest that if he is not on any iron rich foods or supplements, then you can have him evaluated by his pediatrician and have his stool sample tested for occult blood and for infection if they are runny as well.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Sumeet.
