Infant, Never Taken Breastfeeds, Is Extremely Slim. What Diet Will Help Him Increase Fat?

Hi doctor. My baby is 10 months old and he is a slim baby. He was never been breastfed. I am very anxious for his health. His current eating schedule is as follows: - 5 ounces formula milk at 7 AM - then a mashed cooked apple at 10 AM - 4-5 ounces formula milk at 12 noon - Then some moong dal khichadi at around 4:30 PM - 4-5 ounces formula milk at 7 PM - Then 3 spoons cerelac at night (around 10 PM). - If required, I give him some milk (lilltle quantity) at 12 midnight before he sleeps. Is this schedule and diet good enough for his age, or should I modify it to meet his growing needs? I am also not sure how much fat I should introduce in his diet. Doctors say fat is very important for a growing infact/baby. I prepare his afternnon khichadi (4:30 PM one) in ghee. That s the only meal in which I add fat content to his food. Is that enough, so should I add ghee/butter/cream to cerelac as well?

Hi Shilpa,
You seem to be giving a nice mixture of feeds for the baby.
If he is not crying for more and passing stools normally you need not worry.
You can add one type of fruit juice in between and can add another meal of cerelac if possible in the day time.
Do not add ghee to cerelac-it will make it heavy to digest and also will delay the next feed.Fat is there in milk also.child,s weight at 1 year should be 3 times the birthweight, then it is normal growth!!!! keep it up!,,

Hello
Thanks for the query
You are feeding
1) 15 ounce milk - 300 calories
2)1 apple- 50 calories
3) 1/2 katori khichadi plus one spoon ghee- 100 calories
4) other- about 50 calories
You have not mentioned the weight of child. He needs at least 100 calories/ kg.
Be more liberal in adding fat ( will help in increasing calorie content without increasing bulk, you can use cheese)
Increase the frequency of feeds 5-6 times a day( Khichadi, dalia, Kheer, suji ka halwa) with 3-4 snacks( banana, apple, cutlet etc.)
Add mashed egg, potato, banana( contain high calories), smashed fish and vegetables.
Also give chopped solid to built chewing habit
Give milk in between or with snacks.
Feed with spoon and change feeding pattern( they also get bored by same pattern of feeding)
I hope this answers your query well
With regards

Welcome to HealthcareMagicForum

Hi..shilpa.., the child is needed to be fed every 2 hours at once, because it will get digested early, also the baby will eat only a small quantity.., the above food items are fine but you need to increase the frequency of meals.. never hesitate to give milk.., ordinary nandini dairy milk is good, give at least 1 liter per day at regular intervals of time... after following this for a month there will be around 2kg weight will increase per month,,. but never give up... wt will increase gradually...

Take care..
