Insect Bite On Leg, Got Allergic. High BP, Taking Medication. Could Insect Bite Have Increased My BP So High?

Hi Dr. G. I had an allergic reaction to an insect bite on my leg and went to urgent care last night. My blood pressure was 220 over 90. I do take medication for hypertension but my blood pressure has never been that high. Could the allergic reaction (hives) have affected my blood pressure that much? Sorry Dr. I wasn't aware that there was a fee associated with this site. I see my own doctor tomorrow so I will ask him the same question which will be without the fee.

Hi, Welcome to HCM.

Absolutely no problem. If you have any more questions regarding your health that needs to be answered quickly then please visit us again.

However, to answer your question if the hives are widespread on the body it may cause decrease in blood pressure rather than increase. This is because during such allergic reaction high levels of histamine is released in the blood stream causing widespread dilation of the blood vessels with subsequent reduction in blood pressure.

Looks like in your case the increase in blood pressure maybe due to some other cause and may need to titrate your current blood pressure medications. It is great that you will be seeing your primary physician for the same.

Have a great day.
