Intermittent Severe Pain In The Shin.radiating To Ankle. Applying Heat Helps. What Is The Reason For This?

I recently hit my left knee extremely hard on the corner of a cabinet. Since then I have intermittent severe pain in my left shin in the fatty part on the outside of my leg going down into the shin bone to the ankle. The pain is so severe I have to stop what I am doing and hold my leg up waiting for it to disappear. The pain also occurs when I am in bed, making it difficult to get comfortable. Heat helps somewhat but not that much.
