Hi, irregular menstruation during breast feeding is not uncommon as hormones that are required for breast milk to be produced and secreted also affect menstruation. These effects are usually self remitting and go away by themselves once breast feeding is stopped. However you have not mentioned if you are using any birth control measure. If you are not using any, the chances of pregnancy are always there and since you have a history of abortions in the past, if I were in your place I would get a pregnancy test done to rule this out. In case the test is negative, then waiting for the problem to resolve helps. In the meanwhile try to recognize if there has been a change in the breast feeding pattern during the last month or so, and if the frequency of feeding has decreased especially feeding in the night. A change in feeding pattern also affects the periods. Another common condition causing this is problems related to changes in thyroid hormone levels. If the bleeding is persistent and severe then a further evaluation and ultrasonographic examination of the uterus and ovaries, along with a blood thyroid test would be helpful. If someone with your complaints would walk into my clinic and if the pregnancy test was negative, I would probably advise her to wait for another 2 weeks or so until the next regular period came, keep a breast feeding time chart, prescribe a drug that helps to control bleeding like tranexamic acid and follow up after the next regular period was due.
