Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What is the genetic factors involved with Alzeimers? My wife, 84, has suffered with Alzeimers for five years and is currently in an assisted living/hospice unit. Her mother died at 95 with the same disease; her sister is 92, similarly diagnosed, and in assisted living for six years. This is why I feel that, at least, in this case there is a definite indication of a genetic factor involved. What do you think? Rich Hight , Toms River, N.J. Thank you!
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Some times Alzheimer's disease strikes early and fairly often in some families often enough that experts single it out as a separate form of the disease. It’s called early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease.
People with Down syndrome have an extra copy of chromosome 21. As they grow older, they often get Alzheimer’s symptoms, though at a younger age than others who get the disease. Still more genes on study , still have more doubts please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query.
