Hello, my 23 yr old son just started taking sertraline 50mg 1.5 tab/day and will increase to 2 tabs in 1 wk. He will be traveling to Chile and Bolivia very soon and has gotten the vac for yellow fever and typhoid. He was given a script for malaria and Cipro for his travels. He will be careful with the water etc. but should he avoid any combination of the above. It was suggested he take Imodium possibly over the cipro. He is health with the exception of a bicuspid aortic valve which is doing fine. Thank you so very much.
Hi & Welcome. I appreciate your concern your beloved son who will be travelling abroad. It is not safe to take Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) while
Taking Cipro while on antidepressant Sertraline can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening.
He should seek immediate medical attention if he develops sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, shortness of breath, or palpitations during treatment with these medications, whether together or alone.
Imodium (Loperamide) is an opioid drug generally prescribed for the control and symptomatic relief of acute nonspecific diarrhea and of chronic diarrhea associated with inflammatory bowel disease. It can not be a substitute for the antibiotic Cipro (which is effective against typhoid fever).
So, in view of the above he should avoid using Cipro and instead to use an alternate effective but a safer medication after consulting his doctor.
Hope I could answer your queries. Best regards. A feed back is appreciated.
