Is Erythromycin Treatment Effective For Infection In The Eyes?

My 5 week old has had a yellow/green discharge from his eyes since a few days after birth. He was prescribed Erythromycin a few days after his birth. The drainage did not clear up. When we went to his 2 week appointment, the pediatrician said it was clogged tear ducts. I took him back a few days ago because his eyes still had a lot of yellow/green drainage and they did a culture, and he has also had a stuffy nose with thick green snot. They prescribed Erythromycin again. She called and said his eye culture showed Haempohilus parainfluenzae. Is this something I need to be worried about? She said it is mostly seen in adults, and she was calling infection disease and would get back to me tomorrow. He is still being treated with Erythromycin.

Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, it can be due to acute upper respiratory tract disease or due to infection in nasal crusts or lining which may have transmitted the H. influenza into the child, due to closer vicinity as unusually it cause respiratory tract infections rather eye infections.

However, the precipitating factor like a clogged tear duct which has to connect eyes with nose internally for tear drainage may have transmitted the infection.

The antibiotics choice is usually mentioned with culture report and antibiotics choice should be made based on sensitivity reports.

But ophthalmologist review and any surgical intervention for opening the duct should be consulted.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
