Is Flagyl Tablet The Right Medicine For Severe Bowel Infection?

I finished a 7 day course of flagyl - prescribed for a bowel infection. I was not told by doctor or pharmist about side effects, only on day 4 I googled it. I still have stomach pain, especially when I eat, I have been off it for 1 week, how long before symtoms go away.I will never take it again

Hi & Welcome to HCM.

I can understand your problem.

Flagyl (Metronidazole) is very effective the treatment of bowel infection caused by parastites like ameba, giardia, etc. It is also effective against anerobic bacteria some time responsible for severe bowel infection.

The most common side effects of Flagyl include: abdominal cramps, metallic taste, headache, nausea and vomiting.

The abdominal pain which aggravates after eating may be due to acidity related stomach upset.

You may take a proton pump inhibitor like Omeprazole once daily one hour before breakfast for at least one week.

If there is no improvement consult a physician for proper evaluation and to rule out other causes of abdominal pain.

Meanwhile avoid taking hot and spicy veg and non veg foods, coffee intake, smoking and alcohol (if you consume) should also be avoided.

Take yoghurt and fresh fruits.

Hope to have answered your query.
