Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Hydrochlorothiazide Effective In The Treatment Of Osteopenia?
I have osteopenia. Dexa Scan = left hip/T-score:-0.4 and L1 to L4/T-score:-1.7 Internist said 10-year probability of fracture is 6%. Internist has recommended I take Fosamax. I do not want to take this med - too many ill side effects - but Dr. says it is the most effective of the meds and most people only experience heartburn. What do you think of hydrochlorothiazide (keeps calcium from escaping in the urine) as a treatment?
Hydrochlorthiazide is a diuretic and will lead to loss of electrolytes and is never recommended to stop calcium outflow.
Fosamax is a good medicine and it can be taken for 2-3 years before giving a medicine break of one year.
Since you are in the early stage of osteopenia, you should take medicine as recommended.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
