Is Levaquin The Right Medicine For Cough And Wheezing?

I am 66 yrs old. I had a cold which affected my asthma and I have taken the med pack of prednisone 6/5/4/3/2/1 and still am having trouble breathing. I am wheezing and still coughing constantly. I have also been prescribed a steroid inhaler which I am using 2x a day. I have used that for 4 days but still am wheezing. now I am prescribed Levaquin. I don t want to take an antibiotic if certainly not necessary. I am a diabetic and don t like to take anything extra.

Hello,

Welcome to Healthcaremagic. I will try to answer your queries as best as I can.

Your upper respiratory tract infection has triggered off your asthma. As you already been started on oral prednisolone (which is a steroid) roughly about 4 days back, you would already have noticed some improvement by now. As your symptoms have not yet settled, it is very likely that your upper respiratory tract infection is from an infectious cause, hence your doctor prescribed you the Levaquin (which is Levofloxacin, an anti bacterial/antibiotic).

I would advise you to take the Levaquin, wait for 3-5 days and see if your symptoms settle. If still you are coughing you may need a longer course of steroid tablets. You have to finish your antibiotic course too. Steroid tablets (and some antibiotics) may raise your blood glucose levels, so I would advise you to get your blood glucose checked after 1 week.

I hope this has helped you.
