Hello I just turned 50 look 35 anyway I found a 4cm aortic swelling at the stem . Stayed the same size for 4 years now . I was a smoker not heavy. But completely quit for good . What are your views o n Losartan as a way actually shrink reverse size of aorta. I take 100nd a day but read a heavier dose like double would work maybe .I also take metroprol 50mc to. And I have been really upset about this afraid to move as might explode aorta.I m a cyclist and afraid to get heart rate up. I m 6-1 and 260lb . Thanks

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query in HCM.
Losartan has been shown to help reduce the size of the aortic dilatation in people with Marfan's syndrome. I am not aware of any published study regarding its benefit in aortic dilatation in other conditions.
Metoprolol , a beta blocker, is a very good drug to control your heart rate and blood pressure in you. If you find that your heart rate is going up more than 100/minute while cycling, you can increase its dose.
Relax, if you are a little careful and take your medicines, I see little chance of your aorta exploding as you fear.
I am available if you have any query, you can search my name at HCM if you want to ask me any specific query.
Wish you good health.
Take Care,
Dr. Noble Zachariah
