Is Metoprolol Advisable For Anxiety And Elevated Blood Pressure?

Hi, I am a 39 year old male. I first had an episode back in November 2012 where my heart went into afib. That day I drank a large coffee with 4 shots of espresso in it and also took some Tylenol old plus medicine. Late that night while playing video games at about 2:00 am I went to get off the couch to go to bed and BAM, into afib. After being in the hospital overnight with an IV drip my heart went back t l sinus rythm. 2 years later my heart again went into afib. I took a couple vicadines earlier that day and later that night after having sex I got up to go to the kitchen and BAM, into afib. Again after 12 hours with an IV drip and it kicked back to sinus rythm. The latest episode was last Tuesday. I again took a Lortab 10 MG and 5 hours later went to Walmart. In the parking lot lraving and BAM, into afib, except this time my heart rate shot to 200 beats/ min. Went to ER and after 12 hours and a drip heart was back to sinus rythm. Doctor prescribed me metoprolol ER 25 MG once a day he said for anxiety and stress. Since last Tuesday I have bought a BP monitor and mornings vitals are 135/85. During day 150/90. Night before bed is 140/87. These are al l average. When I see the 150/90 I fee, Frraked out and my heart rate increases to probably 100 beats per minute. Although I can t measure it because it slows down within 30 seconds back to a steady 90 beats per minute. Can I just be freaking myself out? Does it sound like I qualify for metoprolol? I would prefer to not take it. It doesn t seem to help I have read that if you abruptly stop taking metoprolol you risk heart attack, afib, etc... Have I been taking metoprolol long enough now where this could happen to me? Please repond with your opinion. Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello ,
Welcome to HCM.
Your symptoms and medical history is suggestive of paroxysmal Atrial fibrillation which is common heart rhythm disorder . You should continue with METOPROLOL as it controls the heart rate and helps in preventing any further AF episode . Metoprolol is a beta blocker and it should not be stopped suddenly , the reason is that rebound hypertensive episodes are common if stopped suddenly .
With this I would like to suggest you that avoid caffeine , alcohol , smoking , stress BECAUSE all these can trigger cardiac arrhythmia .
If you want to stop any prescribed medicine then first inform your healthcare providers .
Best Regards ,
Dr.S.Tomar
