Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been taking Mucinex 1200 mg (blue pill)for the past 7 days for chronic cough due to allergies and have lost my voice, too. Could I switch to MucinexDM 1200 (yellow pill). I take Amlodipine Besylate for maintenance of High Cholesterol. Thanks,
Hi & Welcome. I understand your concern and the situation. Yes, you can take this medication but the underlying cause of chronic cough must also be addressed and treated accordingly. Mucinex DM (Dextromethorphan & Guaifenesin) is a cough suppressant and expectorant is effective in the treatment of both dry and productive cough (cough with sputum). It can break down the thick mucus and clear the airways and ease out chest congestion & also control the severe cough. However, you are advised to visit your GP for clinical examination and treatment of allergy including bronchodilator (such as Salbutamol) to relieve the wheezing (if you have) associated with cough and infection by a course of appropriate antibiotic. Amlodipine Besylate is a calcium channel blocker used to treat high BP, it is not used for the treatment of high cholesterol level. Hope this information helps you in getting the most appropriate treatment (Statins) for high cholesterol. A feed back is appreciated.
