Is Oxymorphone As Effective As Oxycontin And Oxycodone?
I have been on oxycontin and oxycodone for years, because of constant high level pain. I recently received a letter from my health provider an stated after 8/15 they will not cover any of the costs. They have recommended oxymorphone. How compatible do you feel this medication is, and obviously I cannot transition over night, what would the transition plan in time, and consistence of relief look like?
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your situation. Oxycontin or Oxycodone is an opioid medicine used in pain control mainly. Oxymorphone is also an opioid drug. Both drugs have almost same mechanisms of action and have good control over pain. The difference is in pharmacokinetics like time of release, and onset of actions. In equivalent doses they have almost same side effect profile and same efficacy. In general Oxymorphone is thought to be stronger as compared to Oxycodone in controlling the pain.
No need to go for a strict transition plan, instead cross tapering of doses over about 2 weeks should help. Start reducing the dose of Oxycodone and in the same time start increasing the dose of Oxymorphone gradually and in the same time. This would prevent any withdrawal symptoms.
Thanks, I hope this helps you. Take care
