Is RFA Procedure The Right Method Of Treatment For Back Pain?

I am considering having an RFA procedure on my back due to pain. I have had two previous surgeries due to herniations on l3,l4 and l5 areas. I also have severe arthritis, nerve compression damage to my right leg and foot. What can I expect in getting this procedure?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Heat ablation may do well in the short run but over the course of time it is not uncommon for pain to return and in some cases it can be worse than before. I typically do not recommend RFA procedures to my patients based on the relatively long term outcomes I've seen over the years. I would consider alternative therapy or another opinion altogether for pain management purposes. Once the ablation is done and the nerve is destroyed, scar tissue will form and you can't go backwards.

Thanks
