Is Sertraline HCL Effective In The Treatment Of Hallucinations?

my dad is 90 years old and on hospice care and is seeing people that are not seen by any one else. so the health care people said to give this (sertraline Hcl 25mg) it started at one a day now they want 4 a day... will this stop him seeing things not there? are the side effects worth the risk , or is there some better solution???

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Sertraline is an effective drug used for depression.
However, I don't think if it has any role in hallucination. May be your dad has depression for which it is used. Regarding his hallucination , it should be evaluated in detail by a neurologist as certain brain degenerative diseases can cause it. Sometimes it may be a bit difficult to manage. Sometimes anti-pscycotic may help. However, it needs assessment in more detail .

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
