Is Triamcinolone The Same As Hydrocortisone Butyrate?

I am away from home. I have a rash thinking it was hives but it has spread to my face. My grandchildren have also broken out with the same rash and was given a prescription of Triamcinolone 0.1% ointment 80gm. Is it the same as Hydrocortisone Butyrate cream?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.

Both are corticosteroids and are used in various inflammatory conditions of the skin.

But Triamcinolone is much potent and stronger, but you should not use it on sensitive areas like your face.

Its common side effects on the face include burning, irritation, redness,
peeling, thinning of your skin, blistering skin, or prominent blood vessels under the skin and large purple or brown skin blotches.

Since Hydrocortisone is not so strong it is less likely to cause the above mentioned side effects hence can be used after consulting your doctor.

Hope this answers your query.
