Is Tymer Eye Drop Safe During Pregnancy?

Hi Dr. John Meyer. My wife s left caruncle is swollen for 3 days now. We went yesterday to a specialist (opthalmologist) and she was given a Tymer (Gatifloxacin Opthalmic), 1 drop 3 times a day. She is 2 months pregnant. Is the Tymer eye drop safe to use if she is pregnant? And is her pregnancy causes the swollen of her left caruncle? Please note that this is the first time she had this and it is not painful or itchy. thanks.

The eyedrops should be safe to use. There is little or no absorption into the body so the baby won't be affected. The pregnancy is not the direct cause of the swelling. However, pregnant women are somewhat more susceptible to infections because their immune system is mildly suppressed during the pregnancy, so in this sense it could be related. Hope this helps.
