Is A Headache Persisting After A Head Injury A Matter Of Concern?

Hello, Last Thursday I hit the top of my head very hard on a granite counter top. It hurt very bad at first and I was a little dizzy, having to sit immediately for about ten minutes. The pain lasted a couple hours along with a headache and then seemed to subside mostly. Now 4 1/2 days later I still have a slight lingering headache with some slight neck stiffness and it is very tender and still somewhat swollen in the spot where I hit it. Should I be concerned since the headache has not completely subsided?

Hello!

Thank you for your question on HCM!

I understand your concern and would explain that it is normal to have a headache for some days after a head concussion. Sometimes it can last for weeks, up to months , becoming a real problem.

It is caused by the contractions of the head muscles, causing a tension type headache. Another explanation of the headache, is a temporary dysfunction of the brain after a head trauma, leading to a low ability of autoregulation.

It will get better spontaneously. Just be patient and relax.

I recommend taking some painkillers and have total rest during these days.

If your situation worsens, instead of improving, I recommend going to the ER and perform a brain CT scan to exclude possible delayed intracranial hemorrhage.

Hope to have been helpful!

Greetings! Dr. Aida
