Is A Jaw Alignment A Major Surgery And What Is The Recovery Time?

hi my brother is getting some kind of surgery with his jaw. The doctor said that they are going to pull his bottom jaw more out. They also said that the back will be kind empty so they are going to put something to fill it. Is this a major surgery? How long does it take to recover? will this surgery change his life?

Hello,
This is major surgery. General anesthsia and a hospital stay will be required. As an adult when there is a skeletal discrepancy, you do not have the advantage of a child where the jaw is growing and the growth of the jaw can be guided with orthodontic treatment. This surgery requires bone to be added if the lower jaw is going to be extended. Often there are multiple surgical locations. There will be pins, plates and/or wires involved. In general, at least one week will be required until returning to work with a three month period of limited activity. The coordinated orthodontic treatment can take 6 to 12 months to complete. The complexity of your brother's surgery will determine the recovery time. This surgery is considered when in need of major improvement in function and results in a great esthetic change.
Thank you for your inquiry and best wishes for a successful surgery for your bother.
