Is An Abrupt Withdrawal Of Premarin Safe In An Elderly Patient?

I will be 81 in March. Have been on Premarin.625 since a TAH BSO in 1984. Now my Primary Care Physician says that the OBGYN should prescribe She does not prescribe oral estrogen. What is your take? Should I just stop taking it? Am on a two year cycle of FORTEO for osteoporosis. Second year will be up in December. Sio far no MD has taken to me. Nurse Practitioner of Administrators only and mostly vis computer. Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Abrupt withdrawal not safe in patients of old age may develop symptoms of hormonal imbalance. Even continue taking may lead side effects of breast cancer or uterine cancer or ovarian cancer etc. Please consult your treating doctor he will examine and decide appropriate treatment for you.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
