Is Chronic Vomiting In A Toddler A Symptom Of Appendicitis?
Hi, my toddler has been having gastro issues for the past three days. On Fri night he threw up twice in the night. Lot of undigested food and curdled milk came through. Then, it sort of settled and although he did not vomit, he was not getting much better. He had a mild fever on Fri but has been fever free since. We gave him 3 doses of Ondem on Sat and two on Sun. His appetite has been very bad all of this time and he largely has been drinking only liquids. Today, he only had some curd rice in the afternoon and that too when I forced it. This evening, he again threw up a lot. I pressed his belly because he said his tummy is full but he says there s no pain. He also is active after throwing up and seems better. Am seeing my pediatrician tomorrow. Should I be concerned about appendicitis or anything serious? Thanks!
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Appendicitis in a child usually begins with pain around the belly button. Then there is vomiting which is followed be right-sided lower abdominal pain.
The appendicitis pain is very intense. If your son had appendicitis, he would not be active, out of bed.
The fact that he was ill with vomiting and fever for a few days and has now been able to keep fluids down suggests that he has viral gastritis (viral infection of stomach).
I suggest offering him only fluids until he has not vomited for 6-8 hours. After this period, he may drink or eat anything healthy that he wants. Don't force.
I hope I have been able to help you. Please return if we can assist you again.
