Is Continuing Pregnancy Safe After Detecting Hypothyroid Levels Being High?

I am35 year old female, 5'5", 145lbs. 14 weeks pregnant and my TSH levels were 17. I have no history of hypothyroidism. My doctor wants me to repeat my TSH and also have T4 drawn. How significant are the fetal risk after going this far in the pregnancy with undetected hypothyroid and levels this high?

Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr Saumya Mittal, MD.

Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query

Thyroid control is very significant. A patient of hypothyroidism may have a baby that is not fully developed mentally- the thyroid hormones are needed by the baby for good development of the mental faculties.

I will suggest you do as the doctor says. I think he is on the right track

I hope this helps you. Inform the reports mentioned above/if any other so I can be of help further.

I have given you the answer to the maximum considering the information provided. The results of the tests could further enhance my answer to you.

Please do understand that some details could be extracted from a detailed history and examination.
