Is Dark Black Color Diarrhea A Cause For Concern?

Hello, My son ate something that has caused him to have bad stomach aches and diarrhea. He has had these symptoms for about 40 hours. Most recently his diarrhea is very dark, almost black. He is 25 and otherwise very healthy. Should I be concerned about the color of the diarrhea? Thank you,

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Black diarrhea is usually related to hemorrhage in the upper gastrointestinal tract. I suggest to use antacids three times a day.

I also recommend to use PPI medication such as Omeprazole. If the symptoms continue I suggest going to the emergency room.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.

Regards,
