Is Depression And Mood Swings A Withdrawal Symptom Of Benadryl?
Hi, I am 30 yo female. Taking only birth control as far as medications go and healthy. For about a week while staying with family, I was taking Benadryl every night (they have cats). I stopped when I got home and had a major mood swing. I felt incredibly depressed and emotional. Could this have been withdrawal from the Benadryl? Thanks!
I can understand your concern. Benadryl is Diphenhydramine and the drug is an antihistamine drug. The drug results in sedation so is used for sleep also. Regular intake and then abrupt stoppage results in withdrawal especially in form of insomnia, restlessness and some times mood swings.
You are also taking OCPs and these hormonal contraceptives are known to result in mood swings. So the mood swings you are having are occurring either due to withdrawal or due to OCP use. To confirm the diagnosis detailed evaluation is needed.
For some time medicines like Benzodiazepines as Clonazepam or Lorazepam in low doses can be used and this will help in good sleep and will reduce anxiety, mood swings etc symptoms. Please consult a psychiatrist for prescription.
Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
