Is Diarrhea A Side Effect Of Zoloft?

Hi My mother, 91, recently started zoloft 25mg daily for some difficulites with her Alzheimers. She has had some bouts of diarhhea where she hasn t made it to the bathroom. Would this be a side effect of zoloft? Does zoloft have to be tapered to d/c?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern.

Zoloft is an antidepressant (generic name sertraline). Diarrhea is one of its common side effects.

I advise to discuss this side effect with your mother's doctor in order to lower the dosage or change therapy.

Meanwhile, I advise to:
- keep her well hydrated (plain water with oral rehydration salts)
- give tasectan or pepto-bismol for diarrhea
- give probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora

If diarrhea will continue after stopping Zoloft, then, other possible causes should be ruled out through stool examination and abdominal ultrasound.

Wish fast recovery.
