Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Gabapentin And Doxepin A Correct Medicine For PHN?
I am suffering from PHN now for three years. My doctor has me on 300 mg Gabapentin three times a day and 150 mg Doxepin a day. Does this sound correct or would you do something else. I scratch at night until I bleed. Have tried Botox and Acupunture without a lot of relief. I do not feel my doctor is doing everything he could.
PHN (post-herpetic neuralgia) is a rate complication after having herpes zoster that unfortunately, you got it. It happens due to the nerve damages because of herpes zoster.
Gabapentin and Doxepin are the drugs of choice to relieve your pain and itching when Botox and acupunctured failed to lessen them.
I'd also advise to use topical anti-itching cream or patches (containing capsicum or lidocaine) to relieve local pain or/and itchiness.
All the best! Dr.Bardha
