Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery Advisable For A Person With Type 1 VWD?

Hello, my name is Nicole and I was diagnosed with vonwillebrand type 1 when I was a child. Recently due to rapid weight gain I am considering getting laparoscopic gastric sleeve done. I had seen 2 different hematologist because my test results were normal, except for one. both agreed I was safe for surgery. However, they said I did not need DDAVP, Which makes me nervous. I am 32 years old now, and I was diagnosed in the early 90s. I remember it took my physician about year to diagnose me because my test were always normal. I just remember her saying no matter what, I needed to make sure I received DDAVP. I was just wondering, how safe is this surgery for someone like me? is it to risky? what is your opinion? I guess I am just nervous.

Hello,
Anyone with a bleeding disorder is considered higher risk than average person. Von Willebrand disorder is the most common bleeding disorder and is familiar to most surgeons. I would still discuss with your surgeon about getting DDAVP as there are minimal side effects and can make your bleeding disorder less risky. I don't think you should be scared to have the surgery overall.
