Is It Concerning If Children Breathe Through Mouth?

My son who is almost 3, has a low grade fever, about 101 F, with slightly rosy cheeks for about the last 8 hours. Otherwise, he is showing no symptoms and before bed seemed bright and alert - his normal self. He woke up from a nightmare a little while ago, but has gone back to sleep. He may have a little nasal congestion as he was for a time breathing through his mouth, but when he fell asleep seemed to revert to breathing through his nose. Anything to be concerned about? How long is it OK to ride out a low grade fever before using Tylenol? Should he go to Daycare in the morning if the fever remains unchanged?

Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic.

Fever of one day without any localizing signs could as well a viral illness. Usually rather than fever, what is more important is the activity of the child, in between 2 fever episodes on the same day. If he is active and playing around when there is no fever, it is probably and it doesn't require antibiotics at all.

Once viral fever comes it will there for 4-7 days. So do not worry about duration if the kid is active. You can treat fever with Paracetamol at 15mg/kg/dose every 4-6th hourly that too only if fever is > 100F.

He can go to day car but inform the care takers there about his illness and dose of paracetamol.
