Is It Normal To Bleed From The Nose After A Head Injury?

My one year old fell down some stairs and hit her head on the tile at the bottom of the stairs. She has a little red mark on her forehead & had a blood from coming out of one nostril. Her pupils are equal, no throwing up either. She laid down and cuddled for a few min and us now acting fine now. Do I need to take her to be evaluated?

I guess that's why one of my University Professors (Dr. Walter Nosal) used to tell us, and very seriously I might add, that children under the age of 3, should be wearing football helmets until they learn how to walk! I'm very glad that your little girl is doing well. However, your description of blood from one of her nostrils concerns me and I would tell you that unless you have been clearly watching her for at least 24 hrs. since her fall that it would be BEST to take her to the Emergency Room and allow them to check her over and obtain (if they choose) an imaging study of the head such as a CT scan. At the very LEAST you should be putting a phone call in to the girl's pediatrician to explain what just happened. I'll bet they will give you the same advice. In these types of cases it is not unheard of for a person to suffer a wicked blow to the head and pop right back up to their feet as if nothing happened and then, at some time later (within 24 hrs) suddenly pass out and become unconscious. That's why her level of consciousness being normal means very little to me if it's been less than 24 hrs. Of course, if she were in any other condition or state of mind I know we wouldn't even having this discussion but we don't want to be fooled into a false sense of security.
