Is It Normal To Get Mushy Bowel Movements After Using Exlax And Miralax?

My daughter is 7. She s been having stomach aches. I took her to dr on Tuesday and he said she s filled with poop . He told me to give her 3 ex lax that day only and a cap full of miralax everyday. Since Tuesday she s had a few mushy bowel movements. Nothing significant (as would be expected from the supplements she was given). Tonight her poop was a light tan color. Is this normal?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your daughter of 7 and understood the concerns.
Stomach ache in a child can be due to many reasons like worms, appendicitis, abdominal lymph node enlargement and obviously fecolith formation as your Doctor has suggested.
Noted that she was prescribed 3 ex-lax stat and a cal full of miralax but have not told about the reduction of pain or so.
These medicines can cause mushy stools and changes as per their action on colon and bowel.
So nothing to worry unless there is bloating, pain in abdomen, nausea or vomiting.
You can get the following investigations:
X-ray of abdomen in standing position to know about fecoliths.
Ultrasonography of abdomen to rule out appendicitis, lymph node enlargement.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
General Surgeon
